The Unexpected

Wednesday night Chris came home with a terrible stomach ache. He thought he had the flu, I thought he was just overly stressed about his impending finals. The next morning, Chris was still in a lot of pain but was determined to take his first final that he had studied for the past week and a half. Directly after the final, Chris walked over to the on campus health center where numerous tests were done to figure out what was wrong. It turns out he didn't have the flu nor was the pain associated with stress. Instead, the doctor concluded that Chris had an appendicitis and ordered up an ambulance to take him to the local hospital where he had emergency surgery that night to remove his appendix. Needless to say, Chris won't be able to take the rest of his exams until we get back from winter break. We got back from the hospital on Friday afternoon and Chris was ready to leave Ithaca that very day, but now that the morphine has worn off and the pain from the surgery returned, he's in no hurry to go anywhere. Hopefully, he feels well enough to fly to the bay area on the 16th. We are both excited to get out of Ithaca for a whole month and see our family and friends. We miss you all so much!

Chris and Laura made it to Pleasanton, CA just fine. Laura's Mom and I are so happy to have them back but, sadly Chris's condition took a turn for the worse. Last Saturday Chris started to have a high fever and an increase in pain such that Laura called the doctor in Ithaca...the doctor told them to go to the nearest emergency room. Turns out that an infection has caused an abscess in the area of the surgery. Chris is still in the local hospital here in Pleasanton and will remain there until next Tuesday or Wednesday when the infection is expected to subside. - Laura's Dad
